Plants absorb nutrients through osmosis. Because of this, in order for a nutrient to be available to a plant it must be in an ionized or “chelated” state in which it can bond to soils until dissolved in solution through cation or anion exchange. (Chelation describes a particular way that ions and molecules bind metal ions and is a key component for bioremediation of heavy metals.)

 

For a nutrient derived from an organic source to be in this form it must go through a complex set of interactions collectively referred to as the nutrient cycle. This cycle involves a multitude of macro and microorganisms that all play specific roles in this system.
