Grocery shopping is stressful for me.
At times, I cannot fathom the prices on vegetables or fruits, kiwi are about a buck a piece, asparagus can run around $7 a pound, or how about $5 for a tiny plastic container of oregano!!! It’s not even the whole plant!!
So growing our own sounded like it was the perfect solution. BUT, we wanted to grow everything and anything, from cold climate crops like spinach and kale to exotic tropical fruits and vegetables. This obviously meant we were going to need a greenhouse, but with our space, it seemed like an impossible hoop dream destined to end in epic failure!
But was it a fail?
Our greenhouse measures 160 square feet. Now, if I were to ask you what and how much you could grow in a 160 square foot greenhouse, what would your first thoughts be? Not a lot!…. Right?
So, with our 160 square feet greenhouse, we were growing cucumbers, many types of tomatoes, zucchinis, green onions, peas, blueberries, strawberries, dozen types of herbs. Oh, I forgot to mention, we also grew many tropical flowers. Why? I’ll get to that on the next blog. So how in the world were we able to fit all these in such a small space?!
We used a couple solutions. The first was obviously to go vertical with shelving, but you can only use vertical growing on the north wall or you block the light to the rest of the greenhouse (there are some other ways to go vertical, but they have their own issues as well). So what we needed was something else to maximize growing space while maintaining access to all the plants.
Enter the Rolling Flood Table! YES! It rolls, it floods, and it’s a table! Our flood table measure 4 feet by 8 feet. It sits in the middle of the room, with our shelving and other flood tables on either side. Slide it to the left and you get at all the shelving and plants on the right side, slide it to the right and your work isle is now on the left side, simple as that!! It actually created so much extra space we were able to use the entire last 50 square feet for workbenches, a sink and even a space for the computer and lab equipment! BONUS! WINNING!
So remember, don’t fret about small spaces because there is always a solution! You have a dream, make it happen! Things are possible, it just takes creativity and imagination to make it happen. That is exactly what Mike and I did! We put our heads together and made a gorgeous and useful greenhouse and grow whatever we wanted!
